Bharat 5G Labs: Powering India’s 5G and 6G Research Ecosystem

India’s telecom story has shifted from scale to sovereign innovation—and the Bharat 5G Lab ecosystem is at the center of that transformation. Launched by the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi at the India Mobile Congress, the initiative awarded 100+ “5G Use Case Labs” to educational institutions across the country. These labs are now digitally connected through the Bharat 5G Lab Portal, a national innovation grid that brings together students, researchers, startups, OEMs, and industry partners to accelerate 5G, 6G, quantum, and telecom standards development.

TCOE India is proud to support this national effort as an Implementing Agency (IA) for Telecommunications Consultants India Ltd (TCIL) under the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).

Why Bharat 5G Labs Matter

India has one of the fastest 5G rollouts in the world and is already advancing toward 6G research leadership. Yet innovation doesn’t scale without access—access to infrastructure, testbeds, data, mentors, and markets. The Bharat 5G Lab network solves exactly that by:

This democratization of test infrastructure is critical to the goals of Digital India and Atmanirbhar Bharat.

Inside the Bharat 5G Lab Portal

The portal is more than a directory—it’s a collaborative innovation platform. Built to scale, it supports:

CapabilityWhat It Enables
5G Use Case TestingLabs can trial applications in areas like smart mobility, rural broadband, telemedicine, and Industry 4.0.
6G R&D SubmissionsInstitutions and startups can respond to DoT calls for 6G research proposals directly through the portal.
Expert & Mentor RegistrySubject Matter Experts (SMEs), researchers, and industry technologists can register to guide projects.
IPR FacilitationEarly guidance on intellectual property filing and standards alignment.
Quantum & Advanced Tech TrackingCapture of emerging work in quantum comms, secure networks, and protocol stacks.

Bridging Innovation & Investment: “Bridging Dreams and Funding”

To ensure lab-built ideas don’t remain prototypes, the portal ecosystem also supports commercial pathways. At the “Bridging Dreams and Funding” session (held alongside the Bharat 5G Portal launch), 26 startups/MSMEs showcased telecom products to investors and venture capital firms. The goal: move from lab validation to market deployment faster.

This investor connect model will be expanded across the Bharat 5G network—helping deep-tech founders secure the backing they need to scale.

Accelerating 6G: Call for Proposals

Recognizing the global shift toward 6G and programmable networks, the Department of Telecommunications issued an open call for 6G R&D proposals through the Bharat 5G Portal. Focus areas include:

If your institution or startup is working in any of these domains—now is the time to engage.

Strengthening Atmanirbhar Bharat in Telecom

With the world turning to India as a trusted technology partner, the Bharat 5G Labs network supports the full innovation lifecycle—from research to prototyping to deployment—all under a shared national infrastructure framework. The long-term vision: build Indian intellectual property, standards participation, exportable tech stacks, and globally competitive telecom products.
